Too many people think of hiness as the ultimate goal of life. But, if you?re waiting for hiness to arrive then it?s likely that it never will!

You?re always wanting something more, always looking forward to a time when you?ll be ?hy?. And, if you fall into this trap, you?ll never reach that goal. Hiness should not be your life?s goal, it should be your life! The only time to be hy is right now! It?s state of mind, not a set of accomplishments or the accumulation of material things. You must accept that life will always he challenges and things will not always go your way.

Instead of feeling disointed when things don?t work out the way you?d hoped, feel grateful for the experience. Instead of dreaming of a brighter, hier, richer tomorrow, make today as wonderful as you can.

Hiness is a conscious decision and that I can make it right now. Thinking of the future and hing aspirations is essential to leading a hy and fulfilled life. The trick is not to let thoughts of the future overshadow your enjoyment of the present and the reciation of the things and people you he in your life right now!

There is no way to hiness: hiness is the way!

Stop waiting for hiness to arrive and simply decide to be hy! It?s not some great goal or destination, it?s a journey and a way of life.

A woman baked chapatti for members of her family and an extra one for a hungry passerby. She kept the extra chapatti on the window sill. Every day, a hunchback came and took away the chapatti. Instead of expressing gratitude, he muttered the following words as he went his way: ?The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!?

The woman felt irritated. ?Not a word of gratitude,? she said to herself Everyday this hunchback utters this jingle! What does he mean? One day, she decided to do away with him. She added poison to the chapatti she prepared for him!

As she was about to keep it on the window sill, her hands trembled. ?What is this I am doing? she said. Immediately, she threw the chapatti into the fire, prepared another one. As usual, the hunchback came, picked up the chapatti and muttered the words: ?The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!?

Every day, as the woman placed the chapatti on the window sill, she offered a prayer for her son who had gone to a distant place to seek his fortune.

That evening, there was a knock on the door. As she opened it, she was surprised to find her son standing in the doorway. He was hungry and weak. As he saw his mother, he said, ?Mom, it?s a miracle I?m here. While I was but a mile away, I was so famished that I collapsed. I would he died, but just then an old hunchback passed by. He was kind enough to give me a whole chapatti. He said, ?Your need is greater than mine!?

She remembered the poisoned chapatti that she had made that morning. Had she not burnt it in the fire, it would he been eaten by her own son!

It was then that she realized the significance of the words: ?The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!? Do good and don?t ever stop doing good, even if it is not reciated at that time.

"I worked as a bartender/waitress at a bar inside an upscale health-food grocery store (it's a real thing, I promise). Most of our clientele was well-off retirees and 30-something recently divorced men hoping to get a date with someone coming in after a yoga class. Generally a nice group of customers, but definitely rich, uptight people. Forgetting to bring salt to some might be a huge offense, but automatically bringing it causes others to give you a lecture about sodium intake. It was a difficult balancing act.

"It was St. Patrick's Day. There was also a March Madness game with the local university team playing and we were short-staffed. Needless to say, it was an insane evening with me rushing around serving corned beef and cabbage, pouring Guinness, and making sure no one was becoming belligerent.

"For some reason, the bar supervisor always liked to he food specials on display for people to see. While I get the concept, it generally just caused us to get mean looks when we told people they probably shouldn't eat it, as it wasn't a sample and had been sitting out for hours. Since it was St. Patrick's Day, we had a giant display of the corned beef and cabbage dinner special, complete with gry, potatoes, and Irish beer bread.

"As the night was beginning to slow down, I had an older couple sit at the only open seats -- adjacent to our food displays. I was clearing tables and leaned over to let them know I'd be right with them, and a plate slid off the mountain of dishes I was carrying, plopping right into the food display. The 12-hour-old gry and potatoes somehow still had some fluidity to them, and flew up, then dropped? right into the man's lap.

"I was horrified and apologizing profusely while trying to set down the mountain of dishes. The man looked up and me and said, 'I just he one thing to tell you.' He slowly leaned in -- at which point I was thinking he was about to spit in my face -- and he said, 'I don't he to fart anymore, you scared it out of me.'

"It was the laugh I needed that night, and he wouldn't even let me give him a free beer as an apology." -- Belinda Farragut

?------Belinda Farragut

 Watch the world go by

I was sitting outside my new home yesterday (we just moved last week, and we love the new place), watching the world go by.

There were people in cars, in a hurry to get to their next ointment. There were birds flying by, insects just as busy as the people in cars, plants and weeds thriving in the humid(潮湿的) Guam climate.

Inside the house, my children were also busy, as ever, making a mess of the house (which my wife and I would soon clean up), getting into things, their natural curiosity overpowering our previous pleas for them not to play with lotion(洗液,洗涤剂) or take things apart.

The sky was slightly overcast and there was a cool breeze, quite strong and pleasant actually.

It's not often that most of us just sit quietly, and allow the world to pass us by.

 Why not?

What is so important that it can't wait until later? What email must be answered right this moment? Do we really need to read all those articles online, all those messages from others, all those newspapers and magazines? Do we need to he the television and radio and Internet on all the time?

Is life passing us by as we keep our minds super-busy? Are we missing out on the beautiful world around us as we constantly think about the future - what we need to do, our anxieties about what might hen - and the past - what we did wrong, what someone else did to us, what we said, what should he hened?

When was the last time you just sat, and observed? Why not do it today?

When he told me he was leing I felt like a vase which has just smashed. There were pieces of me all over the tidy, tan(棕褐色) tiles. He kept talking, telling me why he was leing, explaining it was for the best, I could do better, it was his fault and not mine. I had heard it before many times and yet somehow was still not immune; perhaps one did not become immune to such felony(重罪).

He left and I tried to get on with my life. I filled the kettle and put it on to boil, I took out my old red mug and filled it with coffee watching as each coffee granule(颗粒) slipped in to the bone china. That was what my life had been like, endless omissions of coffee granules, somehow never managing to make that cup of coffee.

Somehow when the kettle piped its finishing warning I pretended not to hear it. That's what Mike's leing had been like, sudden and with an awful finality. I would rather just wallow in uncertainty than he things finished. I laughed at myself. Imagine getting all philosophical and sentimental about a mug of coffee. I must be getting old.

And yet it was a young woman who stared back at me from the mirror. A young woman full of promise and hope, a young woman with bright eyes and full lips just waiting to take on the world. I never loved Mike anyway. Besides there are more important things. More important than love, I insist to myself firmly. The lid goes back on the coffee just like closure on the whole Mike experience.

He doesn't haunt my dreams as I feared that night. Instead I am flying far across fields and woods, looking down on those below me. Suddenly I fall to the ground and it is only when I wake up that I realize I was shot by a hunter, brought down by the burden of not the bullet but the soul of the man who shot it. I realize later, with some degree of understanding, that Mike was the hunter holding me down and I am the bird that longs to fly. The next night my dream is similar to the previous nights, but without the hunter. I fly free until I meet another bird who flies with me in perfect harmony. I realize with some relief that there is a bird out there for me, there is another person, not necessarily a lover perhaps just a friend, but there is someone out there who is my soul mate. I think about being a broken vase again and realize that I he glued myself back together, what Mike has is merely a little part of my time in earth, a little understanding of my physical being. He has only, a little piece of me.

A passenger told an air hostess that he needed a cup of water to take his medicine when the plane just took off. She told him that she would bring him the water in ten minutes.

Thirty minutes later, when the passenger's ring for service sounded, the air hostess flew in a flurry. She was kept so busy that she forgot to deliver him the water. As a result, the passenger was held up to take his medicine. She hurried over to him with a cup of water, but he refused it.

In the following hours on the flight, each time the stewardess passed be the passenger she would ask him with a smile whether he needed help or not. But the passenger never paid heed to(注意) her.

When he was going to get off the plane, the passenger asked the stewardess to hand him the passengers' booklet. She was very sad. She knew that he would write down sharp words, but with a smile she handed it to him.

Off the plane, she opened the booklet, and cracked a smile(展颜微笑), for the passenger put it, "On the flight, you asked me whether I need help or not for twelve times in all. How can I refuse your twelve sincere smiles?"

It is physically impossible for a well-educated intellectual, or bre man to make money the chief object① of his thoughts; as physically impossible as it is for him to make his dinner the principal object of them.

All healthy people like their dinner, but their dinner is not the mainobject of their lives. So all healthy-minded people like making money--ought to like it and to enjoy the sensation② of winning; but the main object of their lives is not money; it is something better than money.

A good soldier, for instance③, mainly wishes to do his fighting well. He is glad of his pay--very properly so --and justly grumbles④ when you keep him ten months without it; still, his main notion⑤ of life is to win battles, not to be paid for winning them.

So too of doctors. They like fees no dou--ought to like them; yet the entire object of their lives is not fees. They, on the whole desire to cure the sick, would rather cure their patients and lose their fee than kill them and get it. And so with all other bre and rightly trained men: their work is first, their fee is second, very important always, but still second.

But in every nation, there is a vast class of people who are cowardly⑥, and more or less stupid. And with these people, just as certainly the fee is first and the work second, as with bre people the work is first and the fee second.

And this is no small distinction⑦. It is the whole distinction in a man. You cannot serve two masters; you must serve one or the other. If your work is first with you, and your fee is second, work is your master.

Observe, then, all wise work is mainly threefold⑧ in character. It is honest, useful, and cheerful. I hardly know anything more strange than that you recognize honesty in play, and do not in work.

In your lightest games you he always someone to see what you call "fair play". In boxing you must hit fair; in racing, start fair. Your watchword is fair play; your hatred, foul play. Did it ever strike you that you wanted another watchword⑨ also, fair work, and another hatred also, foul⑩ work?

 Mother & Child

It was Christmas 1961. I was teaching in a small town in Ohio where my twenty-seven third graders eagerly anticipated the great day of gifts giving.

A tree covered with tinsel and gaudy paper chains graced one corner. In another rested a manger scene produced from cardboard and poster paints by chubby, and sometimes grubby, hands. Someone had brought a doll and placed it on the straw in the cardboard box that served as the manger. It didn't matter that you could pull a string and hear the blue-eyed, golden-haired dolly say, "My name is Susie." "But Jesus was a boy baby!" one of the boys proclaimed. Nonetheless, Susie stayed.

Each day the children produced some new wonder -- strings of popcorn, hand-made trinkets, and German bells made from wallpaper samples, which we hung from the ceiling. Through it all she remained aloof, watching from afar, seemingly miles away. I wondered what would hen to this quiet child, once so hy, now so suddenly withdrawn. I hoped the festivities would eal to her. But nothing did. We made cards and gifts for mothers and dads, for sisters and brothers, for grandparents, and for each other. At home the students made the popular fried marbles and vied with one another to bring in the prettiest ones. " You put them in a hot frying pan, Teacher. And you let them get real hot, and then you watch what hens inside. But you don't fry them too long or they break."So, as my gift to them, I made each of my students a little pouch for carrying their fried marbles. And I knew they had each made something for me: bookmarks carefully cut, colored, and sometimes pasted together; cards and special drawings; liquid embroidery doilies, hand-fringed, of course.

The day of gift-giving finally came. We oohed and aahed over our handiwork as the presents were exchanged. Through it all, she sat quietly watching. I had made a special pouch for her, red and green with white lace. I wanted very much to see her smile. She opened the package so slowly and carefully. I waited but she turned away. I had not penetrated the wall of isolation she had built around herself.

After school the children left in little groups, chattering about the great day yet to come when long-hoped-for two-wheelers and bright sleds would ear beside their trees at home. She lingered, watching them bundle up and go out the door. I sat down in a child-sized chair to catch my breath, hardly aware of what was hening, when she came to me with outstretched hands, bearing a small white box, unwred and slightly soiled, as though it had been held many times by unwashed, childish hands. She said nothing. "For me?" I asked with a weak smile. She said not a word, but nodded her head. I took the box and gingerly opened it. There inside, glistening green, a fried marble hung from a golden chain. Then I looked into that elderly eight-year-old face and saw the question in her dark brown eyes. In a flash I knew -- she had made it for her mother, a mother she would never see again, a mother who would never hold her or brush her hair or share a funny story, a mother who would never again hear her childish joys or sorrows. A mother who had taken her own life just three weeks before.

I held out the chain. She took it in both her hands, reached forward, and secured the simple clasp at the back of my neck. She stepped back then as if to see that all was well. I looked down at the shiny piece of glass and the tarnished golden chain, then back at the giver. I meant it when I whispered," Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. She would he loved it."Neither of us could stop the tears. She stumbled into my arms and we wept together. And for that brief moment I became her mother, for she had given me the greatest gift of all: herself.

By Patricia A. Habada

 FAMILY

 FAMILY= (F)ATHER (A)ND (M)OTHER, (I) (L)OVE (Y)OU

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door.

Daddy, may I ask you a question?

Yeah sure, what is it? replied the man.

Daddy, how much do you make an hour?

That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing? the man said angrily. I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?

 pleaded the little boy.

If you must know, I make $20 an hour.

Oh, the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, Daddy, may I please borrow $10?

The father was furious, If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard everyday for such this childish behior.

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn't ask for money very often.

The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.

Are you asleep, son? He asked.

No daddy, I'm awake, replied the boy.

I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier, said the man, It's been a long day and I took out my aggration on you. Here's the $10you asked for.

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. Oh, thank you daddy! He yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at his father.

Why do you want more money if you already he some? the father grumbled.

Because I didn't he enough, but now I do, the little boy replied. Daddy, I he $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to he dinner with you.

1、People always say that we are lacking of the eyes of realizing the beauty in life. I can't agree with it anymore. Last week, I woke up very early in the morning, so I decided to take a walk. The street was very quiet and there were many old people dancing in the square. Without many cars, I realized the city looked so clean and beautiful. Some coffee shops decorates so well, which attrated my eyes. The city was coverd by the green trees, which made it a green city. I liked this feeling so much. Action steps: Make positive thinking a habit. In fact, this should be one of the first habits you develop. Get into the habit of squashing all negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones. Instead of “I can’t” think“I can”. It may sound corny, but it has worked for me, every time.

"We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite---"

I do not know who wrote those words, but I he always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it.We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just like a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.

We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed,we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds,we reap a useless crop.If we plant nothing at all,we harvest nothing at all.

I want the future to be better than the past.I don't want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the reminder of our lives.

The past is gone and static.Nothing we can do will change it.The future is before us and dynamic.Everything we do will effect it.Each day will brings with it new frontiers,in our homes and in our businesses,if we will only recognize them.We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeor.

A US dog lover bought her pampered French Poodle its own bathroom complete with a specially commissioned£500 painting.

The dog, named Pierre Deux, lives in an Indianapolis apartment with owners Ilia and James Macdonald. His toilet lid is wred in aqua chiffon with a purple feather boa border and the room is decorated with flower petals and a picture of Pierre's girlfriend, Gigi. He relieves himself on disposable nies left on the floor.

"He's my baby, so he deserves the best," she told the Indianapolis Star. "My mother jokes that she wants to come back reincarnated as Pierre. There's no better life." The bathroom was the work of interior designer Lisa Fitzwater, she said: "It's kind of cool when you he a client who's creative and adventurous. I've done a hundred black and brown rooms. This was a lot more fun."

She commissioned artist Heather Cuthbert-Lutgring to create the painting which features a note, supposedly written by Pierre, saying he'd gone to Paris with his girlfriend but would be back by midnight.

Sat Oct 25, 4:30 PM ET CAIRO (Reuters) - A Egyptian mummy, which is probably pharaoh Ramses I who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago, returned home on Saturday from a U.S. museum after a journey that began with a 19th century gre robbery.

The body, which like that of other ancient Egyptian rulers would originally he been laid in a decorated tomb, was flown into Cairo airport carefully packed in a plain wooden crate.

Witnesses said the box was taken off the plane draped in an Egyptian flag. Zahi Hawass, secretary-general of Egypt's Supreme Council for Antiquities, accompanied the mummy on the flightThe Michael C. Carlos Museum in the U.S. city of Atlanta acquired the mummy in 1999 but offered to return it after studies by Egyptologists helped by hi-tech scanning equipment indicated it was probably Ramses I, the museum Web site said.

Ramses I was originally a military commander and is thought to he become a pharaoh around 1290 B.C. He ruled for just two years but founded Egypt's 19th dynasty, which included Ramses II, who was on the throne for several decades.

The mummy ? which bears striking facial resemblances to Seti I and Ramses II, Ramses I's immediate successors ? was acquired by the U.S. museum from a museum at Niagara Falls on the U.S.-Canadian border, the Carlos Museum Web site said.

It said a Canadian collector probably bought the corpse around 1860 for the Niagara Falls institution from an Egyptian family who had stumbled on a tomb filled with royal mummies around Deir el-Bahri, an ancient site near Luxor.

The Abdel-Rassul family sold treasures from the site for several years until they were discovered and the tomb officially revealed in 1881. The remaining cache included the empty coffin bearing the name of Ramses I, the Web site said.

It was not the first time Ramses I's body was disturbed.

He was originally buried in the nearby Valley of Kings, but tomb raiders emptied that gre in ancient times. Priests of a later pharaonic dynasty reburied Ramses I near Deir el-Bahri with the bodies of other rulers whose gres were pillaged.

First Lady

最早的"First Lady"的称谓是由"first lady of honor", "first lady of the Admiralty"演化而来,用来这些称呼指那些有影响力的杰出女性。1834年更出现了"first lady in (of) the land"的称呼。 She was so beautiful and so good, and not proud she! Though she looked like the first lady in the land."

She will never be forgotten because she was truly our First Lady for a half-century."

1911年,埃尔西-费格森主演的名为"Dolly Madison" (又名"The First Lady of the Land")的戏剧在纽约上演。 Mrs. Thomas E. Dewey discloses today what kind of first lady she will be."

Real men don't cry. We just get something in our eye

A short walk from my house in Hampshire, on a hill overlooking the heathland, is a plaque marking the spot where Richard Pryce Jones deliberately crashed his Halifax bomber during the war. He could he parachuted to safety, but that would he meant crashing into the village. The epitaph reads: "He died that others might live."

It never fails to move me. Not to tears, you understand. That would be disrespectful. But I do usually manage a lump in the throat and that film of moisture over the eyes that men he in their emotional armoury. Gordon Brown demonstrated the non-crying cry beautifully when he made his farewell speech on the steps of Number 10. That catch in the throat. The determination not to weep in public. At that moment, if at no other, he had nobility.

Not everyone can carry it off. I don't think Paul Gascoigne ever quite got the hang of it, for example. But I like to think I he it down to an art, my technique honed from years of watching The Railway Children, Sleepless in Seattle and that scene in Dumbo when the mother elephant is locked away. "Daddy!" my sons will say, pointing the accusing finger. "You're crying!"

"Me? Over Dumbo? Ha ha ha. No, boys, what I am doing is man-crying, a sort of non-crying cry. I'll teach you it one day. Very useful."

They are too young to reciate the nuance yet, but when they are older I will explain that open sog is associated with being female, and so inropriate for men. The Charlie Chaplin analogy might be useful here. He once said that the way to act drunk is to imagine yourself a drunk man trying to act sober. The same is true when a man learns the non-crying cry. To be convincing, you must look as if you are trying to oid tears.

In this respect, it is important for a young man to reciate the difference between male tears and female. I remember once asking the actress Emilia Fox if she could cry at will, right there and then, over lunch. To my astonishment, she could ? from a standing start. Fat tears rolling down her cheeks. When she had finished, she resumed her smiling countenance.

Those are female tears, and the reason you never hear anyone say: "It's enough to make a grown woman cry." That expression only works when it refers to "grown men" and though that may seem tautological, the "grown" is justified. Not all men are grown. The emotionally incontinent exhibitionists who cry when they are kicked off talent shows such as The X Factor are not grown men, for example. Men he to be careful what they cry at, because some subjects are more worthy of tears than others. Grief, obviously. But not self-pity. And rarely should a man cry in pain. And never at the death of a princess he didn't know. Those are the rules.

I suspect my colleague Matt Pritchett might be with me on this. One of his cartoons this past week showed a father next to a television tuned to the World Cup, explaining to his children that "at some point in the next few weeks, you are going to see me cry". And the day after the last survivor of the Great Escape died, he did a cartoon showing a grestone with a mound of tunnelled earth trailing away from it. I seemed to he something in my eye when I saw that, and I expect he had the same something in his eye when he drew it.

 Extend the Miracle/

My skills, my mind, my heart, and my body will stagnate, rot, and die lest I put them to good use. I he unlimited potential. Only a small portion of my brain do I employ; only a paltry amount of my muscles do I flex. A hundredfold or more can I increase my accomplishments of yesterday and this I will do, beginning today.

Nevermore will I be satisfied with yesterday's accomplishments nor will I indulge, anymore, in self-praise for deeds which in reality are too small to even acknowledge. I can accomplish far more than I he, and I will, for why should the miracle which produced me end with my birth? Why can I not extend that miracle to my deeds of today?

And I am not on this earth by chance. I am here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth will I ly all my efforts to become the highest mountain of all and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy.

I he been given eyes to see and a mind to think and now I know a great secret of life for I perceive, at last, that all my problems, discouragements, heartaches are, in truth, great opportunities in disguise. I will no longer be fooled by the garments they wear for mine eyes are open. I will look beyond the cloth and I will not be deceived.
