青春youth(美)塞缪尔? Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the etite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust. Whether 60 or 16 years old, there is the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike etite and the joy of the game of living in every human beings heart. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch wes of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.

The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment; but it is no lessa magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy. A man does what he must in spite of personal consequences,in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures and that is the basis of all human morality.
To be courageous?requires no exceptional qualifications,no magic formula,no special combination of time,place and circumstance.It is an opportunity that sooner or later is presented to us all. Politics merely furnishes one arena which imposes special tests of courage.In whatever arena of life one may meet the challengeof courage,whatever may be the sacrifices he faces if he follows his conscience,the loss of his friends,his fortune,his contentment, even the esteem of his fellow men,each man must decide for himself the course he will follow. The stories of past courage can define that ingredient,they can teach,they can offer hope,they can provide inspiration.But they cannot supply courage itself. For this each man must look into his own soul.

To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are ableto live in the present moment. Irrespective of what hened yesterday or last year, and whatmay or may not hen tomorrow, the present moment is where you are -- always!
Without question, many of us he mastered the neurotic art of spending much our livesworrying about a variety of things -- all at once. We allow past problems and future concernsto dominate our present moments,so much that we end up anxious,frustrated, depressed,and hopeless. On the flip side, we also postpone our gratification, our stated priorities, andour hiness, often convincing ourselves future will be better than today. Unfortunately, thesame mental dynamics that tell us to look toward the future will only repeat themselves sothat"someday "never actually arrives. John Lennon once said,"Life is what~ s hening whilewe"re busy making other plans. "When we"re busy making "other plans", our children are busygrowing up, the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out ofshape, and our dreams are slipping away. In short, we miss out on life.
Many people live as if life were a dress rehearsal for some later date. It isn't. In fact, no onehas a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we he, and theonly time that we he any control over. When our attention is in the present moment, wepush fear from our minds. Fear is the concern over events that might hen in the future --we won't he enough money, our children will get into trouble, we will get old and die,whatever.

One word is too often profaned
For me to profane it,
One feeling too falsely distain'd
For thee to distain it;
One hope is too like despair
For prudence to smother,
And pity from thee more dear
Than that from another.
I can not give what men call love:
But wilt thou accept not
The worship the heart lifts above
And the heens reject not,
And the desire of the moth for the star,
Of the nigth for the morrow
The devotion to something afar
From the sphere of our sorrow.
有一种希望太似绝望;

I think that i shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Againsr the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at god all day,?
And lifts her leafy arms to pry;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only god can make a tree.

Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born. So one day he asked God, "They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"
God replied," Among the many angels, I chose one for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you."
But the child wasn't sure he really wanted to go. "But tell me, here in Heen, I don't do anything else but sing and smile, that's enough for me to be hy."
"Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. And you will feel your angel's love and be hy."
"And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me, "the child continued, "if I don't know the language that men talk?"
God patted him on the head and said, "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak."
"And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"
But God had an answer for that question too."Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray."
"I've heard that on earth there are bad men, who will protect me?"
"Your angel will defend you even if it means risking her life!"
"But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore,"the child continued warily.
God smiled on the young one. "Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way for you to come back to me, even though I will always be next to you."
At that moment there was much peace in Heen, but voices from earth could already be heard. The child knew he had to start on his journey very soon. He asked God one more question, softly,"Oh God, if I am about to lee now, please tell me my angel's name."
God touched the child on the shoulder and answered,"Your angel's name is not hard to remember. You will simply call her Mommy."
What I He Lived For
Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, he governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, he blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.
I he sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy---ecstasy so great that I would often he sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. I he sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness---that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I he sought it, finally, because in the union of love I he seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heen that saints and poets he imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what---at last---I he found.
With equal passion I he sought knowledge. I he wished to understand the hearts of men. I he wished to know why the stars shine. And I he tried to rehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I he achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hatred burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.
This has been my life. I he found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.
When Love Beckons You
When love beckons to you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep. And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you, believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, so shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
But if, in your fear, you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor, into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears. Love gives naught but it self and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not, nor would it be possessed, for love is sufficient unto love.
Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and must he desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a payer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.
被自己对爱的理解所伤害;
在黎明带着轻快的心醒来并感谢又一个有家的日子;
在黄昏怀着感恩之心回家;
The Goodness of Life
Though there is much to be concerned about, there is far, far more for which to be thankful. Though life’s goodness can at times be overshadowed, it is never outweighed.
For every single act that is senselessly destructive, there are thousands more small, quiet acts of love, kindness and compassion. For every person who seeks to hurt, there are many, many more who devote their lives to helping and to healing.
There is goodness to life that cannot be denied.
In the most magnificent vistas and in the smallest details, look closely, for that goodness always comes shining through.
There is no limit to the goodness of life. It grows more abundant with each new encounter. The more you experience and reciate the goodness of life, the more there is to be lived.
Even when the cold winds blow and the world seems to be covered in foggy shadows, the goodness of life lives on. Open your eyes, open your heart, and you will see that goodness is everywhere.
Though the goodness of life seems at times to suffer setbacks, it always endures. For in the darkest moment it becomes vividly clear that life is a priceless treasure. And so the goodness of life is made even stronger by the very things that would oppose it.
Time and time again when you feared it was gone forever you found that the goodness of life was really only a moment away. Around the next corner, inside every moment, the goodness of life is there to surprise and delight you.
Take a moment to let the goodness of life touch your spirit and calm your thoughts. Then, share your good fortune with another. For the goodness of life grows more and more magnificent each time it is given away.
Though the problems constantly scream for attention and the conflicts ear to rage ever stronger, the goodness of life grows stronger still, quietly, peacefully, with more purpose and meaning than ever before.

Youth
Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing etite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young.
When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch wes of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80.
